Skreen is an app for planning cinema trips and sharing what you watch with friends. This policy explains what information Skreen collects, why, and the choices you have. If anything here is unclear, write to hello@skreen.space.
What we collect
Your account
Your name, username, email address, password (stored only as a secure hash), date of birth, gender, profile photo, bio and the other profile details you choose to add. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and an account identifier from Google. If you verify a phone number, we store that number.
What you share in Skreen
Plans you create or join, messages, voice messages, photos and stories you send, polls, reactions, ratings, watchlists, what you have watched and your progress through series, who you follow, and reports you send to us.
Your city
If you allow location access, your phone works out your approximate position (to about a kilometre) and turns it into a city name on the device. Only the city and country are sent to Skreen, so we can show plans and people near you.
Location is optional. You can choose your city yourself instead, when the app asks or at any time in Settings. What you type in the city search is sent to Skreen to find matching cities, and only the city and country you pick are saved. The list of cities comes from GeoNames, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence.
Checking in at the cinema
Skreen counts a plan as watched only when you were really there. Around showtime of a plan you are in, from an hour before it starts until the film ends, the app takes your location once when you open it and sends it to Skreen. If your phone only shares an approximate location, iOS asks you once whether to share your precise location for this. Skreen compares that one reading with the location of the plan's cinema and keeps only the result: whether you were there, how far you were from the cinema in metres and how accurate the reading was. The reading itself is not stored. Skreen never follows your location in the background or at any other time.
After a plan, Skreen also asks whether it happened and who came. Your own answer, together with the check in at the cinema, is what counts the plan as watched. When you create a plan you pick its cinema from a map search, and the cinema's location is saved with the plan.
Cinema tickets
When you add a ticket, yourself or through email ticket import, Skreen reads it on your phone and saves the film, cinema, time, screen and seats. The ticket code you show at the entrance is stored encrypted and is erased automatically a few hours after the showing. The rest of the ticket stays as a record of where you went, until you delete it.
Technical information
A device identifier, push notification token, when you were last active, and basic logs our server keeps to run the service and stop abuse.
Limits and spam protection
To stop spam, Skreen keeps a short record of when you do things such as create plans, post, comment, follow people or message someone new, so it can apply daily limits. When an account is created, Skreen notes the network address it came from, to limit how many accounts one network can create in a day. Both records are deleted after about a day.
Email ticket import
This feature is optional. Skreen can find the cinema tickets you buy and add them for you. When you sign in with Google, Google's sign in screen asks whether Skreen may read your email (gmail.readonly). If you allow it, ticket import is switched on for that Gmail account; if you don't, it stays off. You can switch it on or off at any time under Privacy & Safety in your profile settings. gmail.readonly is the narrowest permission Google offers for finding ticket emails, so here is exactly how Skreen uses it.
How it works
- A narrow search. Skreen asks Gmail only for new emails that look like tickets, in several languages, and never for promotions or social mail. The search runs on Gmail's side, so no other message ever reaches your phone.
- Only genuine senders. Before an email is opened, Skreen checks its authentication result (DMARC) to confirm it really came from the domain it claims. Anything else is ignored, so nobody can plant a fake ticket.
- Read to find the ticket. Skreen reads a matching email's text, its ticket attachment and its images on your phone to find a cinema ticket from any cinema, then discards the email. Images hosted on the web are never loaded.
- On your phone. The search, the check and the reading of the ticket all happen on your device. Your emails and your email access token never reach Skreen's servers. The access token is kept in your phone's secure keychain.
- What is saved. Only the finished ticket (film, cinema, date and time, screen, seats and ticket code) is saved to your Skreen account, exactly as if you had added the ticket yourself. A ticket Skreen is unsure about waits on your phone until you add or dismiss it.
- New tickets only. Skreen only looks for ticket emails that arrive from the moment import is switched on. It never goes through your older email. It checks when you open the app and from time to time in the background.
What we never do
- We never use data from your email for advertising, never sell it and never share it with anyone.
- We never use it to train AI or machine learning models.
- No person at Skreen reads it.
Turning it off
Switch off Find new tickets in Gmail at any time, under Privacy & Safety in your profile settings. Skreen then revokes its access with Google, deletes the access token from your phone and stops checking. Tickets already added stay in your account until you delete them. You can also remove access at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Skreen's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
How we use it
- To run Skreen: your profile, plans, chats, tickets, watch history and notifications.
- To count the plans you watched, from your check in answers and the check in at the cinema.
- To show you films, plans and people that are relevant to you and your city.
- To keep Skreen safe: verifying accounts, handling reports, applying limits and stopping spam and abuse.
- To send emails you need, such as verification codes and password resets, and notifications you have turned on.
We do not sell your information and we do not show ads.
Who can see it
Your profile, plans and activity are visible to other Skreen users according to your privacy settings. You can make your account private and control who can message you. Messages are visible to the people in the conversation.
Services we use
We share only what each one needs to do its job, and each is required to protect your information at least as well as this policy does:
- Twilio, to send phone verification codes.
- Resend, to deliver emails.
- Apple, for push notifications.
- Google, for Sign in with Google and, only if you connect it, email ticket import. Your email is read on your phone, not by our servers.
- The Movie Database (TMDB), for film and series information. We send it search terms and film identifiers, not your personal details.
- Our hosting provider, which runs the servers that store Skreen's data.
We may also disclose information when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account exists. Ticket codes are erased automatically a few hours after the showing. Check in results stay with the plan, as part of your watch history, until you delete your account. The records used for limits are deleted after about a day.
When you delete your account, it is deleted straight away: your profile, photos, stories, messages, tickets, watch history, check ins and follows. Plans you host are cancelled and the people going are told. Group chats you started pass to the longest standing member. Server backups are rotated on a 30 day cycle, so copies in backups are gone within 30 days. Reports you sent us about bugs are kept without your account attached, and we may keep what the law requires.
Your choices and rights
- Edit your profile and privacy settings in the app at any time.
- Delete tickets, messages and other things you have shared.
- Disconnect email ticket import, and turn location and notifications on or off in your phone's settings. Without location you can still choose your city yourself, but the check in at the cinema cannot happen, so plans are not counted as watched.
- Delete your account at any time in the app: open your profile settings and tap Delete account.
- Ask for a copy of your information or ask us to correct it by writing to hello@skreen.space.
If you are in the EU or UK, you have rights under the GDPR, including the right to complain to your data protection authority (in Sweden, IMY).
Security
Connections to Skreen are encrypted, passwords are hashed, and ticket codes are encrypted at rest. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Age
Skreen is only for people aged 18 or over. You confirm your date of birth when you sign up, and Skreen does not accept anyone younger. If you believe someone under 18 has an account, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date above and tell you in the app when the change is significant.
